Could some of you post your version of a library helper job application on this ning? I am having interested 4th and 5th graders fill out an application and take and alphabetizing quiz. The helpers will help shelve only E (everbody) and F (fiction) books. Th DDC is all mine! :)

Hi Kay,
I hope this information can still be of some help!
I have Years 4 to 7 students apply to train as Library Assistants. Applicants' class teachers sign-off the applications.
Our trainees scan books out and in (with me standing right behind them!), shelve Fiction, Junior Fiction and home readers. They sort DDC books and place them flat on the shelf closest to their correct locations. Our helpers also read stories, help with the OPACs, coordinate table games and make book care posters.
They are expected to attend training meetings during one lunch break during the week.
After they have completed Library Assistant training, they are presented with a badge and a certificate and can then apply to train as a Student Librarian. StuLibs focus more on PR, technology and processing in their training.
The kids love it!
I will attach the Library Assistant applications and training manual.
Cheers,
Trish

Trish,
Thanks so much for a great post, complete with attachments! I love the idea of integrating student assistants into the library program. Your description of the training and duties validates the win/win relationship when student assistants are given responsibility and life skills, and as a result librarians receive quality help from invested assistants.

Trish,
Thank you for posting your documents. I'm a new and overwhelmed library tech in a small school...with too many things to do and not enough (paid) hours to do it in! Working long hours just to keep it all manageable. Just this week, I'm going to turn to students for help with my stacks and stacks of books and list of things to do so your information came in handy!

I started a "Library Club" for interested 4th and 5th graders this year and it's been wonderful. In addition to shelving, they have also been instrumental in doing book displays, decorating the library, helping organize and promote our "Pennies for Peace" drive, and served as the presenters at our own school's version of "Children's Choice Awards". They kids have had lots of fun and have developed some wonderful skills!
