International School Librarians

This is a group open to all librarians but specific to international school librarians. Since we usually don't have a district or neighboring schools to rely on, let's create our own network here.

Hi all,

I'm interested in working in an International school in a couple of years, so just want to gather some information and lurk a little. Thanks to Joyce and Ann for creating this forum.

Hi

Can any one suggest me the list of periodicals for professional development of staff and the magazines to be subscribed for for a K-12 school.

I would also like to know how do you budget for the library for the year.

If anyone can help me in these matters, it would be wonderful.

Regards
Manjula

Hi everyone,

I'm working on my MLIS and am trying to create a collection (for my class) for an international school. Does anyone have resources on proportions or percentages in your international school libraries?

Thanks! Elizabeth

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in working in an International school in a couple of years. If you're an American working as a Librarian in another country, could you please tell me how you found your positions?

Hi Linda-

The best place to start in looking for international school positions is vi a search company like ISS and Search Associates

they have recruiting fairs in the US at various times throughout the year. You do have to pay a sizeable fee however.

Another option is just to visit the various school websites and then send them a letter of application (though most will just tell you to go through a service like ISS).

My husband and I have been overseas for 20 years now and have loved every moment.

Best-

Michelle

Hi everyone - I have a question regarding mixed scheduling & the PYP programme.  Any comments/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have proposed a fixed schedule for grades PS-2 and flex for 3-5. To support PYP, I looked at the upcoming UOI schedule for next year & did a "best guess" as to which ones I could provide the most/best support (based on my single year's experience) & have set aside time in the schedule for "UOI support" - 2 period blocks at a time.  It's not the best solution, of course, but I am also in the process of creating a secondary school (6-12) library at the same time & I can only provide so much support for the upcoming year.  We have a small space that can only accommodate one class at a time, so I included Whole School checkout first thing in the morning & was planning on encouraging grades 3-5 to 'pencil in' a regular time for their students to stop in.  Since we are also a pretty small school right now, I was also planning on monitoring students who come & who don't so that we can make sure they don't just 'blow us off', so to speak.  Since I am required to give grades, I am not sure how this whole proposal is going to actually turn out.

Mansfield University Scholarship Program – Begin in January 2012

In an ongoing effort to recruit a new generation of school library leaders, Mansfield University recently received a fifth Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grant to fund scholarships for its totally online School Library & Information Technologies Master of Education degree program with school library certification. If you know of an educator or non-certified librarian seeking school library certification, please pass along the news that we are still accepting applications for the spring 2012 semester.

The Master of Education program, ideally suited for working educators
with no time to drive to a university, offers a convenient and effective path to school library certification. For detailed information and contacts please refer to the Fulfilling the Promise homepage, at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/promise/, or contact Cynthia Keller, Department Chair ckeller@mansfield.edu
