Hello!! Would any of you happen to know of a program for teaching in Japan for a summer or a semester? Like a sabbatical kind of program? I've looked into the Fullbright program for 2012-2013, and Japan isn't one of the countries on the list for that year, so that's out. I hope there are other programs I might explore. I'd appreciate any recommendations, or even contact info for people I could contact. Thanks so much!!See More
"Wow!! Definitely an amazing problem to run into. :) In my dist. we're thinking a lot about collaborative learning spaces and the way our rooms/libraries are arranged. You may have seen a lot of articles on this subject recently; it…"

"Allison, your possibilities are pretty endless! What curriculum (if any) are you using? Next, what are the major topics in each grade level's curriculum, so you can use those to create collaboration opportunities w/ each teacher? What are your…"
"I definitely feel the tension you're bringing up. Right now we only use all our mobile devices in school and have no system in place for checking them out for home use (for the kids, at least). I feel, though, that things like e-books make…"
"I do limit the number (1 to kindergartners, 2 to other grades), but in all the grades except K, I do take into account who is asking for an extra book and what projects they may have. I don't count a book for a report as 1 of their two books…"
"I think if you're just wanting to keep track of which sites you send the kids to, a Google Doc for each grade level would work great. (So would an ikeepbookmarks account w/ a folder for each grade level. Here's what ours looks like:…"
"I use VoiceThread with grades 3 and up every week for the Book of the Week. A kid signs up a week in advance, and I put the book cover in there. Then when it's the kid's turn, he or she BRIEFLY booktalks the book, and then the kids have a…"

"In my experience, it's definitely near impossible to get teachers to get back to you on things like this, even if you make it super easy w/ a quick fill-in paper or even an e-mail. Since I've been in my school 5 years now, I've come…"
I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Mansfield University Scholarship Program – Begin in January 2012
In an ongoing effort to recruit a new generation of school library leaders, Mansfield University recently received a fifth Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grant to fund scholarships for its totally online School Library & Information Technologies Master of Education degree program with school library certification. If you know of an educator or non-certified librarian seeking school library certification, please pass along the news that we are still accepting applications for the spring 2012 semester.
The Master of Education program, ideally suited for working educators
with no time to drive to a university, offers a convenient and effective path to school library certification. For detailed information and contacts please refer to the Fulfilling the Promise homepage, at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/promise/, or contact Cynthia Keller, Department Chair email@example.com
