Be my friend on Shelfari!
I'm hoping to start a group at our alternative high school soon. Until then, this is an easy way for me to try to keep up with the kids, and remember what I've read all year.

Brotherhood 2.0: Watch YA author John Green and his brother Hank communicate in VLOG form every weekday. You WILL get hooked!

SlideShare is a place to share your fantastic PowerPoint another other slide-software presentations. You can tag your own and search for others. I've used slideshare as an easy way to then embed the presentation into a wiki.

To Flex...Or Fix...Or FlexFix?

I've been reading up on flexible & fixed scheduling, trying to figure out a way to make the work we do in our library more effective and more in sync with what classrooms are up to. I work in a grades 3-5 elementary school, and there are six classes in each grade level. I am extremely fortunate to have a full time paraprofessional teaching with me, and feel that we could offer our teachers and students a lot more timely and relevant response to information needs.

My instincts are te… Continue

Nerdfighters Unite on YouTube

I tried to post this last night (12/17/07), but something was wacky w/ TLning. Here are my thoughts, the day after. The "Secret Project" is no longer a secret, nor should it be.

VoiceThread: A New Generation of Storytellers

Joyce Valenza mentioned the online photo-storytelling tool, VoiceThread, as she cruised through new technologies for teaching & learning at AASL in October 2007. The quick demo she showed set off a fireworks display in my brain...possible uses for this technology in collaboration w/ classroom teachers were exploding in my mind.

Here's the idea: you post a photo, and record audio to "comment" about the photo. Multiple "voices" can be added to… Continue

Research at Recess

"We found a giant bug!" A few third grade girls suddenly hung breathlessly around my waist at recess today, gasping news of their discovery before dashing back to monitor the critter's slow progress across our school's courtyard. Compelled by their excitement, I rushed over to see the thing for myself, and wasn't disappointed. It was huge! An insect a good 3 inches long lurched its way through a circle of sneakers with giant pincer-like legs.

Over the next 15 minutes, no fewer t… Continue

Information Power, Day 2

Presenter Doug Johnson spent the morning challenging us to change the way we teach our "net gen" students this year. We brainstormed the plus, minus and interesting points of e-books and talked about how the distinct attributes of this generation of students will affect the buildings, resources, services and mission of our schools, and more specifically, school libraries.

When I imagine a paperless society (taking the e-book to its natural extre… Continue

I did it. You roped me into another one. Now, where's the time to stay on top of all of these.

I hope your first week went well. Mine did. Overwhelming but wonderful. It's going to be an interesting year.

Miss you and thinking of you lots!

Hi Melissa,
The 1st day of school for teachers is Sept. 3rd, then the kids have a 1/2 day on the 4th. New teacher training was August 23 & 24. Can you say overwhelmed? How about you? I'm going in for a few hours today to do some organizing/decorating and will post some photos soon. Nice to hear from you!

Melissa,
Thanks for becoming my "friend" - I think it is supposed to tell me that you accepted my friend request, but it did not. Anyhow, did you know your photo is on the home page?

Hi Melissa! Great to hear from you.
Good luck with your new job- they are lucky to be getting such a hip, young librarian who's not afraid of technology!
Keep in touch. I'd like to be able to compare notes!

Hey Melissa,
Nice to discover your smiling face amongst all the other names! So, have you settled down anywhere yet? I got a job as the librarian at the West Somerville Neighborhood, a small (enrollment of 344 students last year) k-8 public school. The commute will be an hour but I'm really excited about all that the Somerville district appears to offer both students and faculty!

Thanks for the welcoming words! Joyce, I actually met you briefly at ALA last summer; you know my friend Jan in Jackson WY. Did your daughter find a job? Guylibrarian, where is the gorgeous mountain photo from?
