Patty, I just Read Liar and while I kept turning the pages and I loved Micah's love for her "missing" boyfriend, BUT in the end, I wasn't really crazy about the book. If you have ever read Inexcusable by Chris Lynch, the main character is an unrelia…

Sweethearts by Sara Zarr

Couldn't put this one down and so compelling too! Jennifer Harris is 9 years old, fat and a social outcast and recalling a scary time when she was at her best friend, Cameron Quick's (LOVE HIS NAME)house without permission and his father is yelling and scary and lots of other things. Fast forward to Jennifer at 17 and she is now Jenna Vaughn, pretty, thin, funny, with lots of friends and a boyfriend of 3 months, Ethan. But Jenna Vaughn's carefully constructed world is about to fall apart when Ca… Continue

Retaliation by Yasmin Shiraz

Retaliation by Yasmin Shiraz had my heart pumping the whole time I read it. Now I understand why it received 2009 Top Ten Quick Picks for Reluctant Young Adult Readers! What would you do if someone you loved was senselessly targeted, beaten up and left for dead? This is the premise of this book and what happens continues to reverberate through each chapter. People's lives are changed (Sheila Odom and her son Khalil who was in a gang and now spends his days in a wheelchair)--- they jump to conclu… Continue

Stitches by David Small

First of all, I love David Small as an illustrator and author, especially his children's book, Imogene's Antlers, and I think he illustrated the book written by his wife, The Gardener (Not sure of the title) and my idea was this was one happy man. Stitches totally blew me out of the water with his horrendous childhood graphically depicted (a graphic biography)and the fact that he was able to overcome his family dysfunction. Small's words and drawings are superb in what they show and don't show a… Continue

I Heart You You Haunt Me by Lisa Schroeder

I just love novels in verse and Ava has just lost her boyfriend, Jackson in a freak accident. She feels responsible and is now "feeling" he is still with her. The spare words are perfect in describing Ava's profound love for Jackson. She has a strong support system with family and friends but wants to just "sleep" or stay close to home to be with him. I ached for her desolation, loved her friends for supporting her and rooted for her to find happiness and peace without Jackson.

Boy Toy by Barry Lyga
This book is over 400 pages and I couldn't stop reading it- what a super read- very unsettling and compelling. Josh Mendel was 12 when his middle school teacher molested him. I learned that individuals can't always TRULY confront what happens to them even with psychological help....it takes Josh over 5 years to finally come to terms with what happened to him...how he has pushed everyone away and really can't deal with many issues due to the trauma of not understanding sex, love and many other life emotional feelings- highly recommend this!

"Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time"
One of the BEST books I have ever read- Greg Mortenson is humble, determined and as the books says- does deserve consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize- his continued allegiance to giving girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan educations as a way to fight terrorism and give their villages a better life- well there is no higher goal- is there? I loved all of the wonderful men of the villages Mr Greg made pacts with, their love and devotion to him and his striving to give them schools is life affirming.

When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester
rating: 5 of 5 stars
What a compelling, sad, painful read that you know is happening all over to kids today. Julius Lester has crafted a "ripped from the headlines" story about a psychology professor killing his artist wife and the wake it leaves for the two children, parents and friends. Even though it takes place in the 90's, it could be today...Jenna and Jeremy are brother and sister who are completely different but try to struggle through what has happened in alternating chapters. Jenna is a headstrong, foul mouthed teen who was close to her dad and Jeremy, the quiet artist who LOVED his mom. There is prison, a trial and life during and after...and changes in their personalities and lives that are believable and immediate for kids of today. I knew of two different elementary families who went through this and I don't wish it on anyone. Lester writes a compelling author note and includes questions called "chat page" that are thought provoking and will allow for much discussion. http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/62411?utm_medium=api&utm_source=blog_review">View all my reviews. When Dad Killed Mom When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester

in the book, Life of Pi by Yann Martel, I love Pi Patel and his belief in the goodness of animals, human nature and love of God. I recommend this book to anyone who will suspend their belief and just enjoy how one can survive the most horrendous of conditions. I wouldn['t be a good survivor, tis book taught me that much!
Next book I will read is When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester, recommended by my good friend, Doris!
