When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester
rating: 5 of 5 stars
What a compelling, sad, painful read that you know is happening all over to kids today. Julius Lester has crafted a "ripped from the headlines" story about a psychology professor killing his artist wife and the wake it leaves for the two children, parents and friends. Even though it takes place in the 90's, it could be today...Jenna and Jeremy are brother and sister who are completely different but try to struggle through what has happened in alternating chapters. Jenna is a headstrong, foul mouthed teen who was close to her dad and Jeremy, the quiet artist who LOVED his mom. There is prison, a trial and life during and after...and changes in their personalities and lives that are believable and immediate for kids of today. I knew of two different elementary families who went through this and I don't wish it on anyone. Lester writes a compelling author note and includes questions called "chat page" that are thought provoking and will allow for much discussion. http://www.goodreads.com/review/list/62411?utm_medium=api&utm_source=blog_review">View all my reviews. When Dad Killed Mom When Dad Killed Mom by Julius Lester

"Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time"
One of the BEST books I have ever read- Greg Mortenson is humble, determined and as the books says- does deserve consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize- his continued allegiance to giving girls in Afghanistan and Pakistan educations as a way to fight terrorism and give their villages a better life- well there is no higher goal- is there? I loved all of the wonderful men of the villages Mr Greg made pacts with, their love and devotion to him and his striving to give them schools is life affirming.

Boy Toy by Barry Lyga
This book is over 400 pages and I couldn't stop reading it- what a super read- very unsettling and compelling. Josh Mendel was 12 when his middle school teacher molested him. I learned that individuals can't always TRULY confront what happens to them even with psychological help....it takes Josh over 5 years to finally come to terms with what happened to him...how he has pushed everyone away and really can't deal with many issues due to the trauma of not understanding sex, love and many other life emotional feelings- highly recommend this!

Thanks for the welcome.  Two magnificent students helped with the design and web creation but, alas, have graduated.  Our school has switched to Edline so must migrate the links to a less beautiful but also less static environment.  I'm looking forward to learning from other library people.

Mansfield University Scholarship Program – Begin in January 2012

In an ongoing effort to recruit a new generation of school library leaders, Mansfield University recently received a fifth Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grant to fund scholarships for its totally online School Library & Information Technologies Master of Education degree program with school library certification. If you know of an educator or non-certified librarian seeking school library certification, please pass along the news that we are still accepting applications for the spring 2012 semester.

The Master of Education program, ideally suited for working educators
with no time to drive to a university, offers a convenient and effective path to school library certification. For detailed information and contacts please refer to the Fulfilling the Promise homepage, at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/promise/, or contact Cynthia Keller, Department Chair ckeller@mansfield.edu
