Thank you for the warm welcome, Richard. I'm really pleased that I found this site - quite by chance really - and as soon as I get a chance I will start posting. I'll have to try to fit it in somewhere between working on my website and preparing lessons for the new academic year (which starts in May).

Richard,
So good to hear from you, since you aren't returning my phone calls...I really need to have a chat with you to gather some words of wisdom regarding the web design tool to select to create school library web page I'm currently in the throes of designing for our school - and a course. Also we have a date set for the SBO presentation and I'm hoping to get your input. Could we chat at Starbucks or the Langley Tea Shoppe this week - my treat! Joanie

Hey Richard,
Thanks for your sweet support!!! I am in the middle of a few deadlines. Could we write the article together? Maybe arrange a Skype call?

Dublin City Public Libraries Portal

Reading through the numerous blogs that I belong to I came across information on the new Dublin City Public Libraries Portal: P.

It contains a lot of Web 2.0 technology. While I would not recommend that we adopt anything similar in schools it does offer a view of the type of software that we could incorporate into our websites. If you are interested in taking a spin:

Richard,
Thanks for the warm welcome and the nice comments about Infosearcher. I have to admit I give my print newsletter more attention than my blog - I think I'm going to make it my New Year's resolution -- blog more!

I read your blog and related to it immediately. I just showed 2 of Michael Wesch's YouTube videos to workshop participants and they loved- it created good discussion.

Do you live in Vancouver, BC? The reason I ask is that I'm visiting in April to do an all day workshop for school librarians. In fact, I'll be in Canada the full week of April 14-18 -- I'm starting in Winnipeg on Monday, going to Regina on Tuesday, Edmonton on Wednesday, Calgary, Thursday and finishing on Friday in Vancouver. Each day I'm doing a workshop, "21st Century Strategies to Strengthen your School Library" -- it's with BER, a US speaker's bureau.

If you don't mind I would like to email you in a month or two to pick your brain about school libraries in Canada; it would help me prepare for my workshops.

Pam

McKenna: Volunteers good, librarian better

MARY ELLEN MCKENNA,
Northborough
Daily News Tribune - September 24th

The Daily News Tribune, from Needham, Massachusetts has posted an article from a mother who writes a response to another article posted September 18th ("Check this out: Volunteers help keep elementary school libraries open in Ashland.").

While she admits that she would probably do the same thing she does recognize the importance of having school librarians.

"I applaud the commitment level of the volunteers in Ashland. I woul… Continue

Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest 2009 Results

Hello everyone,

With summer upon us, I offer you some light but interesting reading.

From the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest website:

An international literary parody contest, the competition honors the memory (if not the reputation) of Victorian novelist Edward George Earl Bulwer-Lytton (1803-1873). The goal of the contest is childishly simple: entrants are challenged to submit bad opening sentences to imaginary novels. Although best known for "The Last Days of Pompeii" (1834), which has been… Continue
