This Fall I will begin working as a media specialist in a PreK-5 elementary school. I am a public librarian now and I know it will be a big change, but I am up for the challenge. Last night I spent time reviewing some binder the previous media specialist gave me and I started to feel a bit overwhelmed. I know I can do the job, but I was worried about how to get started. What do I do that first week? How do I know when to teach what skills? It's going to be a big year for me.

To the wonderful world of elementary libraryland! I think you will love it; you see so many concrete rewards every day. If offered with a sincere gesture most teachers are thrilled to have someone with whom to collaborate. Their jobs are so loaded with paperwork (not that ours isn't!) but having someone to co-teach, share ideas, help to reach every child, and enjoy all the funny memorable things that happen can make you very popular.
Please feel free to email me if you have any questions about elementary protocal or survival, this is my 20th year!

Welcome aboard. I made the shift from public to school myself. It was a challenge at first. Try to understand that binder, but do not feel married to it! You can deliver similar instruction in your own style. Spend a lot of time getting to know the faculty and their needs. See how you can help them with their curricula. Please call me if you want to chat!
