Do We Need Libraries?

Laura Pearle has posted a link, on the AASL blog, to a Washington Post column asking "Do We Need Libraries?"
The extensive comments on this article are enlightening and heartening, as citizens voice their opinions on the value of libraries in the digital age.…

What's up with edublogs?

I've just begun reading Will Richardson's "Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts..." and really want to amp up my tech tools for next school year. For the past few days, my blog at edublogs has been unavailable for editing. The site assures users that their blogs are preserved - somewhere - but doesn't give any specifics on when things will return to normal. At this point, I'm considering copying and pasting my posts into another blog (I'm trying to compile an online record o… Continue

A Challenge and an Opportunity

Yesterday I received my tentative teaching assignments for next school year (in addition to my duties in the LMC). I am now scheduled to instruct a mixed class of high school students in current events. I don't have any details yet, but the high school principal said this scheduling is a direct result of my advocating for more (any!) 21st century fluency skills in our district. My hope is the students and I will explore - and master - things like podcasts, blogging, etc. The first hurdle will be… Continue

Is Blogging good for the brain?

After watching a TV report on brain stimulation and its value to an aging population, I began to wonder whether writing a blog would qualify as a beneficial activity. I found an article by Drs. Fernette and Brock Eide, physician-parents with a national referral practice for children with learning difficulties (and co-authors of the book, "The Mislabeled Child") that concludes that blogging is, in fact, very… Continue

Hi Diane, I'll point out your question to the group tomorrow - day 2 of 'tech camp'. Maybe someone will have an idea or two. At the moment my brain is mush! Fun day, but very long.

You're so right about getting people to read blogs and converse. Really hard to do. I don't do much with my blog at all, mostly just a scratch pad for notes to myself. But I'm trying to be better about writing something useful now and then! At the very least, it forces me to string a few coherent sentences together now and then!

Hi Diane, I understand the challemges of being a K - 12 librarian very well. I was the K - 12 librarian at Kingston School for five years. Now I am at Berryville Middle School with 4 - 8th grades. Yes, that is an unusaul age. You either love them or hate them. Seems to be no good in between. And luckily those you dislike can change on a dime and the next time you see them you wonderwhy you didn't like them before and of course goes the same way with the ones you like. They either walk in the library doors as little angels or little devils and usually does not take but 1/2 second to figure out which one. But I enjoy them most of the time.
