CMEC Pan-Canadian Literacy Forum

Hello everyone, On Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday (April 13th to the 15th) I was at the Council of Ministers of Education of Canada (CMEC) Pan-Canadian Interactive Literacy Forum in Vancouver. This was a rather unique experience in Canada. Educators, learners and literacy providers from West to East and into the North were gathered together to discuss themes such as Aboriginal Literacy, early literacy and workplace literacy. Since we were meeting by webcast with people across the country, we… Continue

OSLA/OLA Superconference in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Hello everyone, I had the opportunity to attend the OSLA/OLA Superconference in Toronto, Ontario last week. It is considered to be one of the best librarian and teacher librarian conference in Canada. Mother nature threw us a major snowstorm of 20+ cm on Thursday but we managed well in the conference centre. I was present at two important launches while I was there. A group from the Ministry of Education in Ontario and the Ontario School Librarian Association have just tabled a draft document fo… Continue

Some Positive News in the Press

Hi everyone, I came across this article in the Grand Rapids Press. It describes librarians as thus: "Today's librarians are high-tech information Hardy Boys and Nancy Drews, masters of mining cool databases and wizards at "wikis" -- a Web site or other online resource that allows users to edit content -- as well as social networking Web sites such as Facebook and MySpace." More information can be found at: http://www.mlive.com/entertainment/grpress/index.ssf?/base/features-2/1199717125148890… Continue

Hi Richard! I am sorry to be replying so late. I am knee deep in two classes: Quantitative Research Methods and Organization Theory. I think I'll have something to write about later in the semester on libraries and building social capital with our patrons, but I'm currently in a state of MAJOR STRESS! I appreciate you remembering me, however, and I'll do likewise.

Hey Richard,
Thanks for your sweet support!!! I am in the middle of a few deadlines. Could we write the article together? Maybe arrange a Skype call?

Dublin City Public Libraries Portal

Reading through the numerous blogs that I belong to I came across information on the new Dublin City Public Libraries Portal: P.

It contains a lot of Web 2.0 technology. While I would not recommend that we adopt anything similar in schools it does offer a view of the type of software that we could incorporate into our websites. If you are interested in taking a spin:

Richard,
Thanks for the warm welcome and the nice comments about Infosearcher. I have to admit I give my print newsletter more attention than my blog - I think I'm going to make it my New Year's resolution -- blog more!

I read your blog and related to it immediately. I just showed 2 of Michael Wesch's YouTube videos to workshop participants and they loved- it created good discussion.

Do you live in Vancouver, BC? The reason I ask is that I'm visiting in April to do an all day workshop for school librarians. In fact, I'll be in Canada the full week of April 14-18 -- I'm starting in Winnipeg on Monday, going to Regina on Tuesday, Edmonton on Wednesday, Calgary, Thursday and finishing on Friday in Vancouver. Each day I'm doing a workshop, "21st Century Strategies to Strengthen your School Library" -- it's with BER, a US speaker's bureau.

If you don't mind I would like to email you in a month or two to pick your brain about school libraries in Canada; it would help me prepare for my workshops.

Pam
