About Me:
I'm a teacher, solo librarian and solo techie at a small school in rural Vermont. Being so isolated from other teacher librarians and geeks, I've been keeping a blog and doing as much reading and writing online as I can fit in. I read many of your blogs, and I'm excited to see you here in this new space as well.

Glad to be here.

Librarians: Fair Use Champions, or Grouchy Performance Rights Police?

I'm sharing this post from my blog, because I'd really like to get some input on this topic. I'm noticing a distinct go gettum attitude when it comes to students and teachers breaking copyright, even in the most innocent and mundane ways. It feels like a true departure from librarianship and a distraction from the skills and concepts I want my students to learn about, like intellectual freedom, critical thought and the democratic process. And I'm not sure how we got here. It's clear that… Continue

Making the Internet Work. With Yarn.

I haven't posted to my Ning blog yet, because whenever I have a minute, I'm posting on my own. But I thought you ning librarians might get a kick of the internet model my students made out of cardboard boxes in the library the other day.

Here's one of the minis:

I'd say I'm pretty lucky to have my dream job at 30. It is a bit stressful. Like you, I am solo in a smallish school. And no one here really knows what a library can be. So I have done a lot of convincing. They also had no idea how much it costs to create a library, so it's going bit by bit. They built the room before I came, so I had no say in construction. I have a lot to say about it now, but I'll make do with what I have. I'm struggling a bit with finding contract furniture vendors whose stuff I like. Any suggestions? I'm trying to make it fun while staying within a pretty small budget. We also need more classrooms and a theater that holds the whole school. We are a performing arts school after all.

So, you are welcome any time. Marlboro isn't too far. I hope to get a lot of it set up over the summer so it can be functional and I can run program in the fall. Right now I stare at a computer screen most of the day. But I do have a few books and they are definitely going out. And I teach some database lessons, which staff and students alike are awed by. It's kinda fun.

Anyway, thanks for your interest.
