A community for teacher-librarians and other educators

Hi--
I graduate from my MLIS program in early August, and start my new 6-12 Library/Tech position a few days later! As part of my Tech class this summer, I'm working on developing the library web page, which currently consists of only suggested links.

I'm looking for ideas on what to include beyond the usual research process, databases, book/author recommendations, etc. I'd like to have a blog where students can recommend books, but am not really sure how to include that.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Jeri,
Funny you should ask that...Joyce Valenza has just posted some material from her doctoral thesis
http://joycevalenza.edublogs.org/2007/05/25/school-library-websites...
which directly relates to your query.
I'm hoping to use her descriptions and comments to leverage some changes in my district's library page.
Jeri,
Write me after the weekend. I have lots to share with you!

Joyce-

Do you list your exemplary web sites anywhere? I'd love to see some examples so that I can improve my own site!

Thanks!
Hi Jeri,

I, too, am working on a library site. The best one (so far), that I have come across in my home province of British Columbia is http://www.bestlibrary.org/

Thanks to Diane I will be looking at Joyce's stuff as well.

Tracy
Hi Tracy,

I came across that very site last week on my typical Internet meanderings. I actually contacted the creator of the site last week to see if we could use her ideas for the site to create our own here in Saskatchewan for our high school. If we ever get ours done, I'll post a link for anyone to make suggestions.

That's funny Jenn, I emailed the creator and she emailed right back.

I asked how she created the site and how she got all the widgets up, etc....It turns out she uses a site called TypePad to make the site....

Tracy
Hi, Tracy--

Thanks for the web link. It's great, and I love the design, which is very uncluttered and easy to navigate. Between Joyce's web page and this one, I think I can put together a pretty good website, though I'd like to make it more interactive. I'm trying to figure out how to include some blogs and news updates on the site. grin--though I'm not sure my web development skills are that advanced!

Jeri
Hi Jeri,

I find it useful to add information on the types of literacies that we deal with at my school.

Hi Jeri,

I started a library web site this year....

This is the site I inherited http://sd71.bc.ca/sd71/school/aspen/School/library.htm

and this is my site:

http://sd71.bc.ca/sd71/school/aspen/School/library/start.htm

Eventually, I would like mine to look like Judith's, but my school district just decided to reconfigure the entire district from K-6, 7-9, 10-12 to schools of K-7 and 8-12. I guess my website might be obsolete...

Tracy
Jeri,
I just created my library website this year using IowaPages, which uses Trellix. A professor at UNI, Karla Krueger, created a template for teacher-librarians to use, so I took that and just altered it to meet my needs. I'm pretty excited about it and it has been really useful.
