Has anyone ever let students borrow books to keep over summer vacation?  Would you implement this type of policy? Please share your thoughts.

We started summer check out last year for our high school students.  It worked well from my perspective.

We allow students in Grade 11 and 12 to borrow books during summer holiday. Especially Grade 11 who starts to write their extended essay. They must read a lot of references and think about their resources. It works well every years. We open the summer borrowing in the end of June - beginning of August. We notify that these borrowing is running only in the holiday. We start the regular borrowing in the middle of August when all students and teachers back to school

For the past 2 years, I have checked out up to 10 books for the summer to my kids. They couldn't have any fines or lost books that weren't paid for in a timely manner and had to have a parent permission slip. Last year I lost 1 book. That's pretty good for the gain of having a bunch of kids reading in the summer. It's not been hugely popular as alot go to the public library or parents don't want the responsibility but for the 30 or so kids that do....those are kids reading. It was good last year so we did it again. This is a K-5 school of about 550 kids. We only check out to K-4 as 5th is leaving for middle school.
