I am looking for an alternative to Scholastic book fairs and wonder what others have tried and what they'd recommend.

I am also interested in this topic.

This year I held a Barnes and Noble book in store book fair.  Previous years they had come to the school and displayed books during our school play but this year they would only do an in store book fair.  This was a new experience for me.  We had the fair Sat, Sun and Monday of Thanksgiving weekend.  We set up gift wrapping and they encouraged you to have students put on activities during the three days to attract customers.  We only participated in the gift wrap for one day.  Next year I plan on creating more activities to be performed at the store to increase sales. We also reached out to our alumni who participated with online book orders, which added to our sales.

Crane Sales from Wetumpka, AL puts on an excellent book fair! They've always treated me fairly and provided great books for students.

Checkout "bookweek for beginners" wiki. There is a page designated to book fairs. Gives a list and information about each of them
