Setting up an endowment in a professional organization

Have any of you had any experience with setting up an endowment for a professional association? I understand that NYLA in New York has done some work in this area. AASL would like to explore developing educational endowments. As a part of this plan we want to think about how best to encourage faithful AASL members to consider the organization in their estate plans.

I'm looking for ideas on who best to get this process started and if anyone has participated in this process and can give me the benefit of your experience, I'd appreciate your advice.
