I'm wondering what sources you use for evaluating books that focus on cultures with which you are not familiar. How do you determine if they are culturally authentic and accurate?

There is a discussion on the WOW Blog (Worlds of Words). Dr. Kathy Short is currently facilitating a conversation about the quality of published book reviews, particularly in the area of cultural authenticity and accuracy. This topic should be of great interest to practicing and preservice librarians engaged in collection development and literature integration: http://wowlit.wordpress.com/

WOW also has a publication called "WOW Review" in which children's and young adult books are reviewed from a cultural perspective. The fourth issue of the first volume has just been published at:

Hope this isn't a redundant post but Lee & Low is a small publisher of contemporary multicultural children's books. Great outfit. (And no, none of my books are with them!)
