I am saddened to report the passing of a wonderful colleague, Ellen Nugen, Middle School Librarian at Shanghai American School Puxi Campus.  Ellen had been at SAS for 17 years in the library and was a cornerstone and a backbone of the library media program.  Not only was her influence felt at SAS, but she mentored many a librarian in the Shanghai area in their degree and certification programs.  She was always buying the last edition of some library class textbook to have it available for future library students.  She lived her passion, shared her professionalism, and was a good friend.  Her death has reminded us to live now!  Be kind, and tell others that they are doing a good job...That is what Ellen did.

So sad to hear about this Barb. That will have a big impact in your schools I am sure. Do take care of yourself and thanks for letting us know. Connie

Memories of Ellen Nugent
I had the pleasure of working with Ellen from the fall of 1995 to June of 1998. Since I was a vocal and instrumental music teacher, I was responsible for purchasing the music needed for the department and my students didn't need to use the library for my classes. Then for the 1997-98 school year, Music Appreciation was added to the curriculum. This class did need to use the library. Ellen was fantastic and scrambled at high speed to help find, obtain and make available materials for the students. The high school had only reopened in the fall of 1994 and Ellen did a great job of building up the needed materials for the new venture. She also had to move and relocate everything two years later...and then again a few more times after I left. I gather from friends that she was fantastic at organizing and moving the entire library!
In the course of my teaching career I had the opportunity to work with many, many different Media Specialists, but none were more dedicated or more of a pleasure to work with then Ellen Nugent. She will be missed by everyone who knew her.

With love, Wendy Dillingham
