A community for teacher-librarians and other educators

Hi.

I'm moving from the elementary to the middle school in September and I've been approached by an 8th grade teacher to collaborate on an author research project. We'd like to come up with a list of YA authors that appeal to 8th grade students (in case they need suggestions). However, I'm new to this level, so I'm wondering if anyone has authors that they've particularly enjoyed, and those that students have liked. I've done some looking myself, but know I'm most likely missing many! Thanks, Susanne

Yeah, more authors! Thanks, they'll be added to the  list, too.
Stop in and introduce yourself to the teen librarian at your local library.  He/She will have great info for you and may be able to set up visits for booktalks.  The public library may have booklists or brochures listing popular teen books.  You could also check out the teen tab on the websites for any library; obviously the larger libraries will have more resources.  I am fortunate to use the King County Library System (kcls.org) which was recently named Library of the Year by Gale and Library Journal; see the Teen Zone for numerous booklists.

Thanks for the suggestions. Having someone come in for booktalks would be great, as I get acquainted with new authors and titles.
