I live in the little town of Sonora just north of Yosemite in northern California. I commute about 60 miles to Modesto to work as a Teacher Librarian because we have no Teacher Librarians in the entire county that I live in!!! It's terrible that here in California Teacher Librarians are an endangered species. And it is going to be much worse after the next round of budget cuts in my district- at least $25 million will need to be cut for the next school year and the entire K-6 library program is already on the cut list.

I'm going to be a high school librarian next year!!

I found out this week that I will be the Librarian Media Teacher at Downey High School in Modesto, California next year. Currently I'm an elementary librarian in the same district so it will be the same pay and I'll keep my seniority. One advantage is that I'll be at there all week instead of having to pack up my materials and haul them to another school in the middle of the day on Wednesday like I do now. Also I won't have to wonder year to year about where I will be assign next year because… Continue

Greetings Dana,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen
