I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit.
We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mike McQueen Teacher Librarian at McLain HS Lakewood, CO
Hi Karen,
I'm a teacher librarian & recently started a community based blog for getting boys to read - http://GettingBoysToRead.com. Please send me a friend request if you'd like to network, share ideas, and learn more about getting boys to read.
Thanks for the invitation Karen. When I taught elementary school I had a program to bring authors to the library. How wonderful for you school that their is always an author in your library!
Hi, Karen--I sure would like a copy of your book! I am deep into AASL appointments (want one? even a virtual one?) and my favorite food is cookies...not a good combination, I'm afraid...I worry a lot about childhood obesity. Both of my parents had diabetes with final illnesses and it complicated treatment so much...Thanks for the offer! Sara J
Hi Karen, I am a high school librarian from the Denver metro area. Congrats on your book! How exciting. I just started working on a YA novel, I am not a writer but had an idea and maybe something will come of it. It will be one of my summer projects. Any advice?
Karen, My husband grew up in Plainview; although I was raised in the Albany, NY area, I graduated from Palmer Graduate Library School at C.W. Post. Next weekend, we're attending a family wedding at the Vineyard in (near?) Riverhead. VERY small world!
How wonderful that you've published a book - and on such a timely topic. My creativity, such as it it, is expressed in blog comments. Not sure if I have the discipline for an entire book: good for you!
Although I'm past the "normal" retirement age for teachers, because I came late to this career, I'm still working at the advanced age of 60. Love my job, but I have others things I'd like to be doing while I'm still mobile.
My district is Fort Ann, not far from the Vermont border. My home is in Queensbury, NY, located north of Saratoga and just south of Lake George. Gorgeous country for most of the year, but I yearn for warmer climes in the winter. For four years in a row, my husband and I have spent Easter week in Key West (see my photos for a few glimpses of Paradise!)
Nice to "meet" you - if you don't mind, I'll invite you to be my cyper buddy.
Diane
