I was wondering if anyone could suggest picture books that I could use to teach the reading comprehension skills of inferences and visualization.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks

Jon J. Muth's work would probably work.

Let me keep thinking, but those are a good place to start with 8th graders.
Super! Thanks for your help!
The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg is perfect for inferences.
A mystery sounds like a great idea. Thanks for your assistance!
What about this year's Caldecott Winner - The Lion and The Mouse by Jerry Pinkney - absolutely love this picture book
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but you might consider the work of artist/author Peter Sis. His picture books (the ones published by FSG, not Greenwillow, which publishes his books for very young children) are quite sophisticated and the artwork is extremely detailed.

I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing him in his NYC studio several years ago. Quite an intense fellow who takes his work very seriously (and it shows). Check out his Tibet Through the Red Box, for starters.
Thanks for your help. I will definitely try Peter Sis' book.
These are great! I wonder if there are any other picture books that people could recommend for teaching any other reading comprehension skills. Is there a list of good picture books to use with older students somewhere online? I'd love a list of picture books that teach other literary devices like simile, metaphor, hyperbole and alliteration.
