"While I don't have any experience personally managing students' online tech projects (today was my first day of teaching ever), my first career was as a computer techie, so some ideas spring to mind.
Google Docs is of course…"
"I think if you're just wanting to keep track of which sites you send the kids to, a Google Doc for each grade level would work great. (So would an ikeepbookmarks account w/ a folder for each grade level. Here's what ours looks like:…"
"I use VoiceThread with grades 3 and up every week for the Book of the Week. A kid signs up a week in advance, and I put the book cover in there. Then when it's the kid's turn, he or she BRIEFLY booktalks the book, and then the kids have a…"
"Would you share some of what is working for gr. 4-6? Do you have a website perhaps?
If you search a particular author or picture book title, you can probably find related projects (Seuss, Eric Carle, Kevin Henkes, etc.)
"I agree. Many children's books deal with social issues. You can get the children to look beyond the cute characters or anthropomorphized animal ones to discuss feelings, touchy situations, what-ifs, why did he act the way he did?,…"
"How about a video book report, or try voki, its free, and its a cool way to create an avatar. You can have the avatar do all the talking and they can type the report, or you can actually have them record their voices. I only teach k-2…"
"We laminate or cover our covers before putting them on the books. They last a looong time but it is quite a chore unless you can run them through a laminator instead of fitting them to pre-cut sleeves."
"Be sure to introduce yourself, tell a little about YOU---family, pets, hobbies, favorite book (per grade level-ish). I might do a mixer-type game---find someone who "matches" the square on your paper ("went to the zoo this…"
12 years media specialist. Last 7 at secondary level. Suddenly thrust back into elementary fixed schedule position, with additional emphasis on tech teaching. Want to address new AASL and Common Core Curriculum so this is like starting all over again for me!
I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight. If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Mansfield University Scholarship Program – Begin in January 2012
In an ongoing effort to recruit a new generation of school library leaders, Mansfield University recently received a fifth Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grant to fund scholarships for its totally online School Library & Information Technologies Master of Education degree program with school library certification. If you know of an educator or non-certified librarian seeking school library certification, please pass along the news that we are still accepting applications for the spring 2012 semester.
The Master of Education program, ideally suited for working educators
with no time to drive to a university, offers a convenient and effective path to school library certification. For detailed information and contacts please refer to the Fulfilling the Promise homepage, at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/promise/, or contact Cynthia Keller, Department Chair firstname.lastname@example.org
