My high school librarian used to completely cover discarded books with solid-colored paper (as if it were gift wrapped) and place a message on the front of the book indicating the location of the book(s).

With numbered series, it makes sense to shelve the books (e.g. snicket) by their number in the series. Especially when the numbers are displayed on the spine and there is an order; such as Animorphs, Harry Potter, etc.
In our case, it's a matter of available shelf space, and using the shelf top.

Our kids also like National Geographic for Kids and Ranger Rick. I received word that there is no longer Dogs for Kids or Nickelodeon...so sad!
Our kiddos love SI for Kids, Nick and Dog Fancy, too. Zoobooks, Disney Princess, Cat Fancy, Young Rider and Dirt Bikes are really popular. We tried titles like Discover, Spider, New Moon and Cobblestone, but they just never left the shelves.
