A community for teacher-librarians and other educators

Greetings all! Currently I am a Reading Specialist serving Gr. 3, 4, and 5 in the NYC school system. Our budget are being slashed to the bone but, fortunately for me, I have not been cut this year. However, the Principal as asked me to change my job to "Reading Teacher/School Librarian".

We currently have only a disorganized parent-run library program and I have no idea where to begin. How to set up the newly designated Library Room, what to teach, etc.

Is there a user-friendly book or website that might guide me? Thanks for your advice.

Hi,
A good place to start would be the LM_NET archives of discussions for new Library Media Specialists. http://www.eduref.org/lm_net/newbies.htm

Good luck!
I too am "switch" careers from an instructional technology coach to library-media specialist. I will be taking the cataloging class at Old Dominion University in VA. I haven't yet read them but here are two texts that Old Dominion University will using this fall. Maybe you want to check them out.
