oohh - that's awesome - congratulations! Do you attribute any of this to the 'Seattle moms' phenomenon?

Greetings from Washington State! Our representatives sent a bill to the governor (HB2776) throwing state support behind the funding of .6 of a teacher-librarian in schools. That is .6 more than the state funds right now. This funding is to start in the 2011-12 school year, with emphasis that the librarians must be certificated teacher-librarians. Last year a bill was passed that teacher-librarians be a core teacher, and that will be instituted a few years later that HR 2776. Right now in Wa State our teacher-librarians lack funding, clerical assistants, and often work between two schools. We are looking forward to a turn-around.

There are so many things.... knowing the difference between a journal and magazine and between a web site and an article from a subscription database are the most common obstacles my students seem to experience. Using subject heading searches in the online catalog is also very helpful to their research. Thinking carefully about a topic focus and choosing descriptive search terms is vital. Probably most important is understanding that research is a process and each step builds on the previous one.

Thanks Sandra, it is so wonderful that you are helping students realize there will be differences in their library experiences when they get to college. The skills you are introducing will make their transition much smoother.

I emphasize the use of databases when teaching research skills. I tell students we just have a few but college libraries will have many more options. I think if I teach them to use the advanced search, abstract vs full text, how to set up folders, and how the citations are found, to name just a few, they can transfer that to any of the databases. As far as print materials I try to emphasize that the information might not be easy to find, but that using the indexes of books is very helpful in finding specific information.

I teach at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. I teach several sections of an information literacy course. Most of my students are freshmen, so I am very interested in the transition from high school to college as it applies to research/library skills. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who uses specific activities and techniques to help prepare students for academic libraries.

Okay.. I have a big question and its only a question not a gripe!! How do you do it all? What is a day in the life of a high school media specialist like? How do you teach students & teachers, check student passes, make sure students in the media center need help, inventory, set up mics and sound systems for special events, order books, learn about new technology, order AV equipment, catalog books, PR your library, organize programs, ugh?????????????? Does anyone out there have a great schedule that they would like to share?

I am thinking about spicing up my booktalks with video book trailers. I found these sites

I may be coming to visit some friends in California in 2010. Can anyone recommend a couple of inspirational school libraries to visit in San Francisco, Santa Cruz or Sacramento? I would particularly be interested in teacher librarians usning web2 & those working collaboratively to develop information skills.
