A community for teacher-librarians and other educators

Hi all,

I am new to Library 2.0 tools this fall and was inspired at a conference with Joyce Valenza over the weekend to try something new. I am looking to jazz up some staff tech help and possibly help my new student bloggers with how-to videos using Jing. Tried Screen-o-matic, but couldn't get it to work. Here's the link to my Jing show how to make a Google Toolbar for the library catalog. Not super exciting, but this is a test run. :)

Update...
Well, Jing didn't open at work. I guess all of our Dells are not up-to-date. I found the Snipping tool in Vista- that is very neat to use and FREE! Tech dept hooked me up with Camtasia to make some screencasts for students and staff. So far it's very easy to use, but I can tell there is so much more to the software.

Hi Krissy,
I've enjoyed finding out about Jing but I can't help but think that you would be so much better off using VoiceThread. Jing is free right now but may not be in the future. VoiceThread is free with full upgraded account to educators. When I listened to your Jing I didn't hear any audio. Was there supposed to be? VoiceThread allows for audio and drawing on your images to point things out. I've created a couple of "how to" VoiceThreads and I just love it. The great thing about VoiceThread is that they have created great tutorials using VoiceThread on how to use VoiceThread. Check it out!

Thanks for your reply Laura!
My Jing didn't have any audio... I didn't have a mic at home yet. :) I love VoiceThread too and use it with the kids. I hope to share in the VoiceThread posting.
I guess I should have labeled my thread differently. I was really trying to discuss how people are using Camtasia, Jing or Wink. You know... what tips and tricks had they discovered. I had just seen Joyce at a conference and read about these applications in the blogs I read...so I decided to investigate. (You are right- Jing probably won't be free forever... they own Camtasia and SnagIt- software available for purchase.)
With these applications I choose how much screen I want to capture and press record. It records my voice and every move on the screen. I don't have to cut and paste images and then mark them up with arrows like I do in a VoiceThread or PowerPoint. I save it as Windows Media Player or QuickTime and send it off in an email or put it on my webpage. Takes me just minutes. Next week, a few fifth grade "experts" are going to create a video showing their classmates how to navigate in 21classes to write in their blogs. They love the idea of recording their voices and their mouse moving across the page.
Krissy
Thank you Krissy and Laura for posting these resources and for pointing out the pros and cons of each. I'm hoping to have some time over the holiday break to learn more about these applications and video in general. I'm very new to the Web 2.0 movement; I see the value in bringing Web 2.0 in the classroom and have placed it high on my list of priorities.
