At least take a library class or two, there is so much about being a librarian that is not intuitive. Try the K-12 Course which in Illinois is offered in the summer online.....and try a course in intellectual freedom and cataloging. Talk to an advisor for a K-12 program and see if a handful of classes could give you a taste of the profession so you can decide. It isn't about the degree, it is about the knowledge and the professionalism that goes into being a librarian. It isn't just another teaching position. Good luck!
Hi! I just became a librarian at a high school after teaching and coaching English for 6 years. The library was in a disarray! I am struggling to bring order.
I am considering getting my MLIS, but I already have a Masters. I am not sure if I need two. I was actually thinking of getting a doctorate in Instructional Technology or a Specialist in Technology Leadership.

Join us! I'm new, just finished second year at Wisconsin School for the Deaf, and this is our new group on TLNG!
Hi, all. I am just finishing up my MLS with School Media Specialization at Syracuse University. I live in Brooklyn, NY and I am currently looking for a full-time school media position.
I graduated in May with a degree in Elem. Ed, but did not get a classroom job this school year. Instead, I got hired as an extended substitute in an elementary library. I just started in November (the former librarian retired Nov. 1) and I love it! I have lots of questions, though, so I'm sure this group will be helpful!
Thanks for the welcome. Good luck with your new position, it sounds a bit like what I walked into. I hope the library you're taking over was more organized than the one I walked into. I already love Destiny but will not be using it next year as my school will be part of a pilot program with the NYPL exploring how a union catalog with them would work. We'll be using their catalog software for at least the pilot year.
I will not hesitate to ask questions as I figure I'm likely to learn more here than I am in my MLS program.
Good Morning,
I am a new media specialist over botht he elementary and high school libraries. I look forward to connecting with all of you.
