Greetings Suzanne,
I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.
If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!
Sincerely,
Mike McQueen

Thanks for the additional information! I will give it some thought.
The amount of time spent depends on you and your students. HS students are pretty independent. We met once a week for only about 30 min. It was basically to make sure they were reading. I gave them the batch of practice questions sent out and we practiced on the Moodle site. Here is a post that will be added to the WEMTA site from Sandra Wurdeman:

Battle is promoted in November with a poster of book titles through each English classroom.
Teams sign up adding their email address, making this a true ebattle. I use their email addresses to communicate with them and send battle questions. Answers are given to the high school library assistant. A correct answer wins a small prize.
As high school students they are very independent. I only meet with them four times. Once as an introduction to the program, and then three more intra-school battles. The first battle is a fun “shout the answer” battle, one is a pencil and paper battle, the last is the Moodle practice battle. Scores are posted on a large chart in the library. During the final online battle the most improved team also attends to cheer on the winning team and join in after school snacks.
Hope this help you to decide.
