Greetings Janene,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen

5 coordinators! Wow! That really makes me realize how behind my district is. We used to have a tech coordinator many years ago, then the position was eliminated. They are just reinstating it as a "new" position this year, but the main focus for the first year or two will be on training principals, secretarial staff, and high school counselors how to use a data collection program that our province is implementing. I don't see the person they hired having much time to work at curriculum integration. I'm trying really hard at my school, but have quite a negative staff who sees playing around with new tech tools after school or at home as being "onerous" or as an imposition on "their" time. It's a real uphill battle, and I am trying my best to slowly but surely "up the geek factor" at my school. Collaborative units work well for modeling the use of new tools and strategies, but even then it's only a few people who will even get their feet wet in this fashion. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Janene,

You sound like you have an exciting position as Instructional Technology Coordinator! Do you have a library background? Do you work a lot with teacher-librarians to help better train them to be the technology advocates/trainers at their own schools? I'd love to hear more about the model that your district uses. We have just created a new position and hired a District Technology Coordinator in my district (not me, unfortunately). I'm curious to find out what other tech coordinators do, so I can provide feedback about the role of our new coordinator through the district tech committee that I'm on.
