Hello helpful Teacher-Librarians!

I have a group of students (The Dead Poets Society) spending the night in our library this weekend.  One of them is looking for poetry games.  Does anyone have ideas?  Thanks.  Patti

I unfortunately can't remember the name of the poem, or the book that it is in, but Shel Silverstein has a poem that should be read in one breath, and it is a good sized poem.  I did this a few years ago with my third and fourth graders when I was teaching poetry and they had contests, who could get farther in the poem without taking a breath.  It was hilarious and the kids had a great time trying to beat each others' times.  If you could find that poem (or any good length poem, it probably doesn't matter), have the kids take a deep breath and one at a time, try and read the poem in its entirety and see who gets the furthest!

Enjoy your night!

Thanks, Dana!

Found it!  The poem is called Hard to Please and it is in the book "Falling Up".  The poem is hilarious, all rhyming words about a group of complaining kids.  If you have the book, check it out.

Have fun!
