We're getting ready to have some renovations on our library. They are planning to close our old computer lab (attached to one side of library) because it is very small and can only accomodate 25 computers. They are taking in a large office complex on the other side of the library to build a larger, newer lab. The library will also receive new carpet, paint, and some other things. We don't have a budget yet. We have to have our requests ready within two weeks, though. Our old circ. desk was purchased circa 1980 and was not set up for technology. Both circulation computers and all check out equip. are run from extension cords and power strips. I would appreciate recommendations for an ideal high school circulation desk.
We are also asking for a ceiling-mounted multimedia projector, & wireless connection for our laptop teaching station, & electric projection screen due to our high ceilings. I understand we're getting new lighting this summer and new heating & cooling system. We need so much. I have no idea where they will "draw the line." We have 30 computers in the library in addition to our lab. Some tables are computer tables with keyboard trays, some tables were built for the library years ago--no keyboard trays & chairs have to straddle dividers. We're trying to address that as well. We are considering asking for a 3M Security System (or similar system) to keep books and/or other library materials from leaving undetected. We have an enrollment of approx. 2000 students. What experience do any of you have with one of these systems? Are they worth it? Would it be worth sacrificing something else to be able to include this?

Thanks,
Jan McGee

Jan,
I don't want to see you sacrifice anything critical, but yes, they are important. We save thousands of dollars in lost materials. In my past school I did inventory comparisons and was shocked at what I saw pre- and post-system!

Joyce,
Thanks for the input. We 've been busy with state conference and state testing! We've also learned that they probably going to run out of money before they get to the library part of the renovation! Imagine that! One week, we're told to be ready to meet with the architect, then next week, they're over budget! They believe the funding will "rebuild" and that we will gradually get some of the things we need. We were encouraged to go ahead and turn in our "wish list" just in case.
