I am looking for some new lessons for K-3. I am wanting to do some author studies. I thought of Robert Munsch for the second grade. Can any one give me ideas on what activities you do when you do an author study?

I love Robert Munch, he is funny. I started with Jan Brett in December and I will do a few more books of hers in Jan. I like Lois Ehlert, she is a wonderful artist and does seasons. Gail Gibbons is another favorite. For the older kids, Magic Tree House and Spiderwick is very popular. My question is what do you do for the authors study?
Hmmm, those are good authors. I do Mo Willems, too, which is always a hit. I usually do a brief history of the author (the kids love seeing their pets or childhood photos), what got them into writing, and any other interesting stuff we find on their Web sites. Sometimes there are video interviews out there, but I haven't found one that is short and engaging enough for the K-3 set. I'm curious to see what others do, as well!
I have done a few author/illustrator studies with my 1st grade classes this year - Dr. Seuss, Leo Lionni, Eric Carle and Margaret and H. A. Rey. I did each author for only 1 lesson which was a little short. We looked at the library books by each, read one, briefly discussed style, viewed a power point presentation that I had made (just 6 slides or so) and that was it. Next year I think I'll add a second lesson when we make a picture in the style of each illustrator - those collage mice that Leo Lionni does are really fun. I know another librarian who picks one author a month for her preschool and kindergarten students - I think she does a lot of crafts. The good news is that there are a lot of good web sites for current authors - I listed some on my libray site if you want to take a look at just a few -
