Yea! Can't wait to pick your brain!
Thanks! But I always have more questions than answers! I did start a new inquiry project today, its a little different, will be fun to talk about as I go through it.
I'm doing a small-group 1st grade inquiry. I thought they were really restless last time, so I thought maybe I hadn't structured it right, maybe I should cut it short and revamp for next time, etc. Then today, when I went to pick them up from class, they hustled ahead of me, got out their stuff, and got right to work. They worked feverishly for over 30 minutes.

We, too, are learning as we go along. I tried a variation of the Post-Its on a chart method from Debbie Miller's READING WITH MEANING, and we keep having to make the charts longer. (They can't be taller because the kids can't reach that far across the table.) Some kids' charts are now the full length of the table! That's been fun to watch.
That sounds like fun! I have a small group of 3rd graders. We are getting ready to do a version of the ever popular animal report; but we are going through it with inquiry. We started by wandering and wondering through books, to help us see what we don't know, what we want to learn more about, what we think we know. We wrote questions, and tomorrow we are sorting our questions into groups then will try to come up with some essential questions to encompass these questions and any other we encounter. This first one is a group project, with me modeling. We are doing the armedillo -- I am already having so much fun! Sometimes the most difficult part for me is staying on track, so many teachable moments occur.
Can't wait to hear more.

It occurred to me as I was walking with the 1st grade group on the first day that a good inquiry topic is both something we know something about AND something we want to know more about. Funny the things we learn when we try to explain things to 1st graders!
