Power Searching in a Web 2.0 World

Dennis O'Connor and I are offering a new session of Power Searching in a Web 2.0 starting Monday, April 28. This 4 week course features techniques to become a more proficient searcher in a world of social networks. Searching Web 2.0 is quite different from Web 1.0 in terms of the purpose and process of searching as well as the need for careful evaluation. The course includes interactive activities, search challenges and asynchronous discussions with educators around the globe. The cost is $99… Continue

Searching for the Date to cite

I recently got an email from a librarian in Illinois asking about ways to use Google to identify the date of an article. She wondered if there was a command in Google that would provide update information.

I responded by saying that I don't think Google itself has a tool for sorting records by cache date, but if any page is cached, students can click that link and find the date it was updated or added to Google's index. Look for the term Cache at the end of the snippet. This isn't… Continue

Greetings Carl,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen

Hi Carl,
Months ago, Stephanie Novack sent me an email about the Teacher Librarian Ning and I'm just joining now. As you can guess, I am perpetually behind, but I'm trying to keep track of the century as best I can. I'm looking forward to using this site to help me.

I'm happy to see the initial interest in information fluency. As we develop new products and services, your input will be invaluable.

In this ning, you'll find topics we've posted as well as topics posted by others. Research shows that about 1 in 10 viewers get involved in online interactions--we'd like to boost that number and create a dynamic and practical workplace.

Just joined and look forward to networking with some neat people. I enjoy your website 21century and have used it as a reference in an upcoming manuscript I'm hoping to publish soon.
Take care,
