Slam Poetry

This is a promotion of a sort. And in the spirit of the students who invited me to listen, and record, I am going to lay myself a little bare in explaining why all of this mattered.

I am burned out. I spend my days not sure whether to cry or rage. I am frustrated with entitled students who either a) don't want to learn or b) don't want to think. I know it seems like the same thing but in this era of testing they can consume information without thinking, and feel as if they are learning. I… Continue

Musings on the new AASL learning standards

In October AASL published the updated information literacy standards “Standards for the 21st –Century Learner”. Now the parsing begins… what is right about the

standards? What is wrong? What do they mean? How can I use the standards to improve my instruction, and

student’s learning? There is more to

come, more work being done by AASL but in the meantime what is that we,

teacher- librarians, notice about the new learning standards.…

Beyond the LMC

The past two school days I have spent "in the field" with science students gathering photos and video for a class project to post podcasts, and vlogs on the PORTS web site, which is hosted by Ca. State Parks. It was an interesting exercise in gathering visual information - what was important, and who was the audience. It was fun to get out of the library, we had beautiful weather (which is significant up here) and it was refreshing. But it also got me… Continue

Greetings Mary Ann,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen

Hey, Mary Ann.
Hi Carolyn,
It's great to have you in the BCC group. I look forward to high school people sharing their experiences and perspectives.
Best,
Judi
P.S. Love the beach-reading photo. I'm off to Mexico in a couple of weeks. Ahhhhhhh.... We have plenty of sand in the desert but not the warm salty water! The stack of books I'm bringing along can't wait...

There are days when I am pretty sure this should be my job - lying on the beach and reading a book.
