Hi everyone - I wanted to post a discussion about how your Media Specialist Evaluation process works in your state and in your district:

Information about how the media specialist evaluation process works:

Who evaluates you as the media specialist?

What instrument is used to evaluate you in your school district and is it the same or different from your district's teacher evaluation?

How often are you evaluated?

Finally, what 2 items do you wish was included on your evaluation?

Thank you for sharing about your evaluation process in your school district and state. :)

Tammy, I love your questions. I am in Austin, TX where I am considered a teacher when it is convenient for the district. I am not evaluated as a teacher, but as a "Non Teaching Professional." Another librarian in the district and I are working on an evaluation tool that we would like our principals to use. I would like to have a portfolio included in my evaluation. I have been lucky and my principals have always supported the library, but I keep a portfolio just in case. It paid off well for me a few weeks ago when we had our SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) review and the review team gave their first ever commendation to a library program. I practice a great deal of self evaluation, so I am always prepared for my principal, or any other oversight group.
Hi Bonnie :)
Thank you for the reply, and the term "Non Teaching Professional" is interesting to me. How does your district define a "Non Teaching Professional" and what other educators fall into this category?
Thank you again for the reply and for participating in my discussions. :)
Counselors are also Non Teaching Professionals. However, as I said before, the district counts me as a teacher when convenient to them. Though evaluated on the same scale as counselors, I am paid on the same scale as teachers.
I am a Texas elementary librarian. I am evaluated by my Principal using the same rubric and criteria as the teachers in the building. We do a "self evaluation" at the beginning of the year and we are observed twice. I am happy with my evaluation process since I consider myself a teacher and believe I should be evaluated as such. Very little in the evaluation has to be changed except for the fact I am not directly responsible for grades.
