Summer reading suggestion: reluctant 10th-12th grade boys

I need suggestions for a great (required) summer read for a class of mostly boy reluctant readers. Please share some ideas. The title must be available in paperback. We need to get this one missing piece of our list out soon.

The existing list is here: http://springfieldreading.wikispaces.com/

Thanks,
joyce

David Loertscher in SL: Reinventing School Libraries

If you're like me, you are continually thinking about what's next, for our profession and for the learners we serve.

Every conversation I have ever had with the phenomenal David Loertscher (whom I consider a mentor), forces me to further consider and often to refine or rethink my vision.

Don't miss this opportunity to meet David in Second Life.

On behalf of ISTE's SIG-MS and AASL, Lisa Perez (aka Elaine Tulip) invites us all to attend Reinventing School… Continue

Gearing up for September--best ideas?

I would love to hear what brilliant ideas you are planning for this coming school year. What 2.0 excitement is brewing? What new bulletin board ideas do you have? How will you be greeting and orienting your new learners? Please share any special, nifty ideas for the greater good.

2007 Quill Award Nominees

At BookExpo America, they announced this year's Quill nominees. It's the third year for these consumer-driven awards. The last two lists helped me plan my summer reading and helped me to discover new authors and titles to include on our high school shelves. Scroll down to the bottom of the list for youth titles.

Create your own group here!

Cathy Nelson just pointed out that we could create groups within our Ning community. This is very cool. I played around by creating one for high school.

Please create any others that make sense to you (ala http://library20.ning.com/).
How about one for independent schools, one for TLs from Arkansas or Alaska, one for the NECC conference, one for TLs without budgets, one for TLs with special super powers?

And the winners are . . . (from my blog)

SEOmoz’s new Web 2.0 Awards were announced yesterday. Last year’s list led me to tools that became a regular part of my life online. There’s lots to explore. Some are already favorites. Some look like great fodder for pathfinders. Others present some cool potential for incorporating in learning activities.

Among the categories:

California's 23 things

I knew it was around, but I hadn't actually seen it. Doug Johnson just pointed me to the California School Library Association's School Library 2.0: The 23 Things. Great stuff for training and learning. Take a good look!!!! BTW, our Ning is one of those things.

Senior bulletin board

Just wanted to share our very easy end-of-year display case idea. Our seniors look forward to this all year.

We put out boxes of index cards and art supplies. Each senior decorates a card with his or her plans for next year. They go crazy competing to create the very best index cards--school colors, mascots, all sorts of images. We cluster them. (For instance, all the Penn State cards go together. All the military cards go together.) This year we photocopied their 9th grade pics from…
