Greetings Carrie,

I'm Mike McQueen, teacher librarian and founder of http://www.GettingBoysToRead.com. Like many school districts, we are in a financial crises. Our school board recently proposed to eliminate ALL 20+ middle school teacher librarians and also cut all 90+ elementary schools to half time. Since we are the biggest district in all of Colorado, we worry this will cause other districts to follow suit. We launched an online movement and are going to do our best to put up a good fight.

If possible, please visit our Facebook page and "Like" us http://www.facebook.com/SupportSchoolLibraries . Adding a positive comment and sharing with your friends would help our morale as well. The board finalizes the budget soon so your timely support would be greatly appreciated!

Sincerely,

Mike McQueen

straight outta kindergarten! sounds like a good rap album! :)

I think you are playing your cards right and smart. Get em hooked with the reading advocacy...then hit em with the information literacy. you can't do too much at first I don't think. It is important to learn the lay of the land and then start to work within what makes sense to help the community. I have good feelings about the impact you will be making...and have already made

Well, this being my first year in library, coming straight from kindergarten -- it was a year of proving myself, for sure. I did a lot of programs that would come under the "reading advocacy" category, and people did take notice. My next step is to really build up the information literacy instructor, so that teachers do see that I am a valuable resource.

The teacher I worked with on the spring collaboration project was one who could see the project as a process; two others are at least willing to share bits (like having me discuss plagiarism) but not quite to the point of actual collaboration. I do have more of an idea (and plan) to get those research skills in, and that is by really being informed so I can teach skills that kids can use.

Here's the funny rub about how you described the psyched-ness of your 3rd graders...in 9th grade, we (used) to have kids study their heritage too! I think it is an example of recycling gone wrong, unfortunately. Your 3rd graders SHOULD do it...but we have to up the ante in HS more than we are doing.

How much luck do you have working with teachers to break up big projects into discreet research skills? Are they stuck on the huge project or can they see the project from the process POV?

Wouldn't it be fun to make em at the end and have local businesses sponsor them?

Could you have your 5 and 6th graders design a big 6 explanation project for the 1 and 2nd graders as an outcome skill? They say, teaching to others is the best way to show learning...
