I am a librarian in a primary school and I often will pair a non-fiction with a fiction book for the students. It is sometimes related to a topic being covered by their homeroom teacher or may just be of general interest. I'm always amazed at how many students will then want to sign out books on that topic. It gets many students to stretch their book choices. Hope this helps.
Allison, your possibilities are pretty endless! What curriculum (if any) are you using? Next, what are the major topics in each grade level's curriculum, so you can use those to create collaboration opportunities w/ each teacher? What are your interests and background so that you can build on existing skills? (These are things to consider at the beginning...) Maybe also, what have you done w/ the older kids that you can apply to younger students? For example, you probably taught web site evaluation and things like that; it's not hard to use that same concept with younger kids, just w/ different sites and a slightly different approach.
Hi! I have been a librarian for grades 7-12 for 3 years after teaching 5th grade for 10 years. In a week, I will be taking over K-6 as well, when our elementary librarian retires. I am looking for great ideas to use with these students to move beyond them just coming to the library for story time. I know that's valuable, but I know there's SO much more that I could do with them! Any ideas are welcome!
Hi Ia m a Teacher Librarian at Ecole Mondiale World School. I think, I will have great time sharing and exploring resources and ideas.
Hi
I am new to the group. I am a teacher librarian in a primary school in Ipswich, Australia. I love sharing books with students.
I am also a keen writer myself and have just self published my first book online as an ebook. The stories are suited to 9 to 12 year olds and are great to read aloud.
I have a web site dedicated to my book. It is http://www.wattlecreekbooks.com . There is a free story there from the book you can print and share with your students. Your students may enjoy spotting the typically Australian words used. The cover illustration is by well known Australian illustrator, Craig Smith.
If your students have questions about the book I would be happy to answer them.
Hello, I'm responding to Carol's question about circulating magazines in the library. I buy clear plastic jackets to put on the student magazines, they're barcoded and circulated just like books, for a week. Teachers magazines are barcoded and checked out, too. Hope this helps.
