Profile Information

Hometown:
Dallas, Texas
What is the name of your school?
I moved to the Dallas, Texas area in 2009 after spending the last fourteen years as the high school librarian at Dorman High School in Roebuck, South Carolina. It was sad to leave such a great school but I was fortunate to quickly find another librarian position in Dallas. During my second year in north Texas, I took a library position closer to home in a small middle school and love the opportunities of helping this community emerge into the 21st Century.

Twilight Party

Our media center hosted a successful Twilight party with over 125 high school students and faculty attending. Refreshments were served, many played Twilight bingo, students played Twilight Jeaporday against the faculty, and gifts were given to many. You could even get your picture taken with Edward as seen in the picture with Ashley Layne.

Sue,
Hey! I've been looking over the requirements for my SLIS Student Internship that will begin shortly. I will be working with Sally Hursey at the BSH 9th Grade Campus but will need to visit at least three other LMC's this coming semester. I am hoping that I will be able to come to Dorman and see your beautiful facility!

Sounds like you have been a busy little beaver on your days off! I have worked on my 720 paper and a presentation I am doing for the English teachers at my internship school. I was supposed to be there Monday and Tuesday so now am going to have to reschedule those days. I'll be in touch mid-month if I am going to be able coming to visit your LMC.

"Highly qualified" per Texas law means that you have passed the Texas certification exam or otherwise meet the NCLB "highly qualified" definition.

If you have maintained your certification (check online at www.tea.state.tx.us) you are already highly qualified. You can go to the TLA website at www.txla.org and join the TLC mailing list for school librarians and you will hear of job openings. Marilyn Beaird is the library coordinator at Lewisville ISD (which includes Flower Mound, Highland Village, The Colony and several other smaller towns) and she will know of upcoming vacancies.

Mansfield University Scholarship Program – Begin in January 2012

In an ongoing effort to recruit a new generation of school library leaders, Mansfield University recently received a fifth Institute of Library and Museum Services (IMLS) grant to fund scholarships for its totally online School Library & Information Technologies Master of Education degree program with school library certification. If you know of an educator or non-certified librarian seeking school library certification, please pass along the news that we are still accepting applications for the spring 2012 semester.

The Master of Education program, ideally suited for working educators
with no time to drive to a university, offers a convenient and effective path to school library certification. For detailed information and contacts please refer to the Fulfilling the Promise homepage, at http://libweb.mansfield.edu/promise/, or contact Cynthia Keller, Department Chair ckeller@mansfield.edu
